Theo Science Alert, nghiên cứu tập trung vào việc dư lượng protein cao bất thường và khó hiểu đã được tìm thấy trong một số kiệt tác của Da Vinci và đôi khi cả trong tranh của danh họa cùng thời Sandro Botticelli.
Nhóm tác giả đứng đầu bởi tiến sĩ Ophelie Ranquet từ Viện Cơ học và kỹ thuật quy trình cơ khí thuộc Viện Công nghệ Karrlsruhe (Đức) đã phân tích lại một số tranh của danh họa Da Vinci và tìm ra nguồn gốc của protein đó: Lòng đỏ trứng.

Việc một thức ăn xuất hiện trong sơn dầu tưởng chừng như kỳ quái, nhưng các phân tích cho thấy đó là chủ ý của danh họa.
Theo bài công bố trên Nature Communication, nguyên nhân khá đơn giản: Lòng đỏ trứng được sử dụng như một chất bảo quản tranh. Và lại là chất bảo quản ưu việt đến khó ngờ.
Với một lượng dù rất nhỏ lòng đỏ trứng, tính chất sơn dầu thay đổi đáng kinh ngạc. Chất chống oxy hóa này giúp làm chậm quá trình đóng rắn của sơn dầu, giúp các họa sĩ dễ sử dụng chúng hơn.
Hơn hết, nó giúp các bức tranh khó bị ố vàng, khó nhăn và chịu được độ ẩm tốt hơn hẳn tranh vẽ bằng sơn dầu thông thường. Vì protein trứng ức chế nước hấp thụ vào sơn trong môi trường ẩm ướt.
Vì vậy, công thức đơn giản đến mức bất ngờ này vô tình đã trở thành báu vật cho thế giới vì giúp bảo quản được các tác phẩm nghệ thuật vô giá tốt hơn mong đợi cho đến ngày nay.
