Microsoft nổi tiếng với những nghiên cứu mang tính đột phá nhờ đội ngũ nhân viên tài năng hàng đầu thế giới. Song song với việc chuẩn bị cho việc ra mắt Windows 8, phát triển màn hình cảm ứng độ trễ 1ms (1/1.000.000 giây), nhóm khoa học ứng dụng của gã khổng lồ phần mềm vừa "Demo" một bản mẫu màn hình desktop 3D với khả năng tương tác độc đáo.


Hệ thống sử dụng một màn hình OLED trong suốt do Samsung sản xuất và được tích hợp các cảm biến Kinect để tạo ra một môi trường desktop ảo mà người dùng có thể thao tác bằng tay theo thời gian thực. Một bàn phím được thiết kế bên dưới màn hình cho phép người dùng có thể đánh máy như trên máy tính bình thường. Khi cần tương tác với chiếc máy này, người dùng có thể dùng ngón tay di chuyển các đối tượng như tập tin, biểu tượng... xuất hiện trên màn hình. Cảm biến Kinect sẽ theo dõi tất cả các chuyển động tay, đầu, vị trí mắt của người dùng, cho phép màn hình cung cấp hình ảnh dạng 3D.

Đây mới chỉ là sản phẩm trong giai đoạn thử nghiệm và có lẽ còn rất lâu nữa mới được ứng dụng rộng rãi trong thực tế, nhưng sản phẩm cho thấy Microsoft đang muốn phát triển và nhân rộng công nghệ cảm biến trong Kinect cho các sản phẩm khác thay vì chỉ ứng dụng cho game như hiện nay. Một báo cáo hồi đầu năm cho thấy Kinect rất có thể sẽ được tích hợp vào các laptop chạy Windows 8 (bán ra vào tháng 10) do Asus sản xuất nhằm tạo nên sự đột phá cho HĐH này.
