Sinh viên đang theo học Tiến sĩ tại đại học Stanford, Elliot Hawkers , đã cùng với nhóm bạn của mình chế tạo ra chiếc "găng tay tắc kè" - găng tay giúp con người có thể leo lên bức tường kính thẳng đứng mà không cần nhờ đến dây hay bất kỳ dụng cụ bổ trợ nào.

Dễ hình dung hơn khi các bạn nhớ lại Spider Man, anh chàng leo leo, bò bò lên mọi bề mặt. Với chiếc găng tay của Hawkers thì người mang cũng có thể một phần nào đó làm được điều tương tự, chỉ khác là đòi hỏi ta phải cẩn thận và leo chậm chậm. Được biết, bề mặt của mỗi găng tay sẽ gồm 24 miếng dính nhỏ, mỗi miếng dính được bao phủ bởi vật liệu polymer hình răng cưa với độ dài 100 micromet. Bên dưới mỗi miếng dính là hệ thống lò xo giảm chấn đặc biệt, đây chính là điểm giúp cho chiếc găng tay này có thể phân bố lực lên toàn bề mặt, không bị dồn lực quá nhiều vào một điểm nào đó.

Theo Hawkers, khi người dùng chạm găng tay vào tường, chỉ có phần đỉnh của miếng dính chạm vào bề mặt và không hề có sự kết dính nào cả. Tuy nhiên, mọi thứ sẽ bám chặt lấy khi trọng lượng của cơ thể đè lên găng tay, và để rút găng tay ra khỏi bề mặt kính, chỉ việc nhấc tay lên đúng góc đồng thời giảm áp lực của cơ thể lên nó. Phiên bản "găng tay Spider Man" hiện tại hỗ trợ cân nặng cơ thể tối đa lên đến khoảng 90kg, tuy nhiên theo nhà phát triển thì về lý thuyết, nếu tăng kích thước của găng tay lên 10 lần thì nó sẽ chịu được cân nặng 900kg.

Nhóm của Hawkers vẫn đang chờ được cấp bằng sáng chế chiếc găng tay này, ứng dụng thực tiễn vẫn còn là câu hỏi lớn bởi nó cần phải được cải tiến nhiều nhằm mang lại sự an toàn tối đa cho người sử dụng.
