Các nhà nghiên cứu tại đại học Lancaster ở nước Anh đã thành công trong việc tạo ra một loại non-volatile flash memory (bộ nhớ điện tĩnh, hay còn gọi là bộ nhớ bất biến) chỉ sử dụng 1% mức điện năng so với NAND flash hay DRAM khi ghi chép dữ liệu.
Bộ nhớ này có tên gọi UK III-V Memory, và được tạo ra dựa trên tiến trình 20nm. Hiện tại nó chỉ mới trong giai đoạn phát triển với mức độ một bóng bán dẫn, cho nên để phát triển thành một sản phẩm thương mại hoàn chỉnh thì cần phải có thêm nhiều thời gian nữa. Tuy nhiên, thành tựu này cho thấy tiềm năng của một loại bộ nhớ bất biến có hiệu suất vượt mặt và hiệu năng đủ sức cạnh tranh với DRAM hiện giờ.
Hơn nữa, việc xuất hiện bộ nhớ bất biến có tốc độ tương đương DRAM khá là thú vị, bởi vì nó có khả năng thay thế RAM trong bộ máy tính của chúng ta. RAM có tốc độ truy xuất nhanh, nhưng bù lại nó là loại bộ nhớ khả biến (volatile), tức mất điện là mất dữ liệu. Với UK III-V Memory, chúng ta vừa có tốc độ truy xuất nhanh không kém, vừa không bị mất dữ liệu khi ngắt điện, quá ư là tuyệt vời. Chưa kể còn tiết kiệm điện hơn RAM nữa chứ.
Tuy nhiên, có một vấn đề cần được giải đáp là UK III-V Memory có chịu được tần suất ghi chép liên tục như DRAM hay không. Có thì vui, không thì chúng ta có thể nhìn sang một hướng tích cực khác là sẽ có ổ cứng với tốc độ nhanh như RAM máy tính.
