Rất có khả năng chiếc điện thoại iPhone 5 tới đây của Apple sẽ được trang bị lớp vỏ siêu bền. Theo một số thông tin thì lớp vỏ này được sản xuất tại Hàn Quốc và được cấu thành từ loại vật liệu mang tên: "Liquidmetal".

Liquidmetal là loại hợp kim siêu bền có thành phần bao gồm rất nhiều các nguyên tố khác nhau như zirconium, titan, đồng .... Liquidmetal mang những đặc tính ưu việt để tạo ra một lớp vỏ mỏng nhưng lại có khả năng chống chịu tốt với các va đập bên ngoài cùng bề mặt mịn khi chạm vào.
 
 
Kể từ thế hệ iPhone 4 trở đi, Apple đã sử dụng lớp kính để chế tạo mặt sau nhằm tạo sự sang trọng và vẻ tinh tế cho sản phẩm của mình tuy nhiên thì thủy tinh lại rất dễ vỡ và bị nứt, ngoài ra thì nó cũng làm tăng thêm một phần kích thước cho iPhone. Nếu những tin đồn về liquidmetal là sự thật thì thế hệ iPhone 5 sẽ có một lớp vỏ mỏng nhưng bền hơn thủy tinh rất nhiều lần.
 
Trong năm 2010, Apple đã ký một hợp đồng trị giá 20 triệu USD với công ty công nghệ Liquidmetal Technologies để được độc quyền sử dụng công nghệ này trong các sản phẩm của mình và nhiều khả năng, nhà sản xuất iPhone sẽ áp dụng nó ngay trên smartphone sắp ra mắt tới đây của mình. Hiện nay thông tin về ngày phát hành iPhone 5 vẫn còn rất mơ hồ, Apple có truyền thống giới thiệu điện thoại mới vào khoảng thời gian tháng 6 và tháng 7 nhưng có lẽ"quả táo" đang muốn thay đổi thông lệ này khi quyết định cho ra mắt iPhone 4S vào tháng 10 năm ngoái.
