Bom Cobalt Được nhà khoa học thiên tài Leo Szilard chế tạo năm 1950, hay còn được biết đến là thiên tài trong bóng tối. Những phát minh của ông có ảnh hưởng sâu sắc tới thế giới, như bom nguyên tử và cách chữa một số bệnh ung thư bằng xạ trị.

Bom Cobalt là vũ khí nhiệt hạch, có nguyên tố Cobalt-59, đây nguyên tố độc có tính chất ổn định duy nhất được tìm thấy trong tự nhiên.

Khi bom Cobalt nổ, sẽ tạo ra phản ứng hóa học từ Cobalt-59 thành Cobalt-60. Sau vụ nổ bụi đất sẽ bắn ra xung quanh mang theo bức xạ. Nguyên tố Cobalt-60 có chu kỳ bán ra trong vòng 5 năm, lúc đó con người phải đối mặt lượng bức xạ cực kỳ lớn. Vùng đất bị nhiễm xạ sẽ kéo dài hàng chục thậm chí cả trăm năm, ở những nơi đó không hề có sự sống.

Không chỉ vậy bức xạ trong vụ nổ còn theo gió lan đến khu vực khác. Một quả bom Cobalt chỉ chứa 9g Cobalt-60 thì sức tàn phá tương đương 4,5kg thuốc nổ TNT, sẽ khiến cả một vùng đất rộng lớn trở nên hoang vắng trong nhiều năm.
